Risk Survey

An Occupational Health and Safety Risk Survey can comprise two components, depending on your requirements. One is a Hazard Inspection which identifies the hazards in your workplace. The other is an Occupational Health and Safety Management System Audit.

The hazard inspection report is set out in an "Action Plan Format". It identifies the hazard and explains why it is a hazard. It provides recommendations to eliminate the hazard or to reduce its risk to an acceptable level. It gives a risk rating so you can prioritise where your limited time and financial resources should best be allocated.

1.1 In here is a description of the hazard and why it presents a risk to the health and safety of people and/or why the organisation may be legally exposed. In here are recommendations for actions to eliminate the risk from a hazard or to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

This column shows the hazard reference number   You fill in these columns by allocating responsibility to individuals and setting dates for completion. The action plan then becomes your management tool for monitoring progress in addressing hazards.
This column gives a colour coded risk rating for "Extreme", "High", "Moderate" or "Low".

To help illustrate a point the Hazard Inspection Report includes photos. In this instance the top guard on the saw is set too high above the saw teeth.

Occupational Health and Safety Management System Audit

Based on Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard 4801:2001 "Occupational health and safety management systems - Specification with guidance for use" an audit is undertaken of the different elements that comprise an OH&S Management System. For each element the audit covers 5 stages of the OH&S Management System Model

  • OHS Policy
  • Planning
  • Implementation
  • Measurement and evaluation
  • Management review

The number of total points possible is adjusted to suit the nature of the industry. There are a series of checkpoints for each element against which the Occupational Health and Safety Management System is scored. Where the score for each element is not 100% then specific recommendations are made on what is required to improve the score.
